Lady Gaga Is The Female Alice Cooper (A Top Story)

On Tuesday Lady Gaga Is The Female Alice Cooper was a top story. Here is the recap: (Gibson) First Tony Bennett says Lady Gaga is "going to become as big as Elvis Presley," and now, shock rocker Alice Cooper is getting in on the Gaga love fest.
In a recent video interview with The Washington Post, Cooper gave this surprising viewpoint when asked what modern rocker is most like Coop:

"Lady Gaga is the female Alice Cooper. She created a character named Lady Gaga. She wrote songs for Lady Gaga. Not for herself – for Lady Gaga," he said. "I write for Alice; I don't write for me… And she produced those songs on stage for Lady Gaga. Now there's a Lady Gaga nation out there, and if you meet her off stage, she's nothing like that person on stage. [Laughs] It's like, me either. I'm nothing like Alice. But we created a character that belongs to rock and roll.
"So, she's the closest, out of everybody."

Lady Gaga featured 'barefaced' on Harper's Bazaar cover - See photo

Lady Gaga went with a new look for the October cover of Harper's Bazaar, one that seems like a make-under compared to her more recent appearances.

The singer, who is known for her unique style and theatrical shows, appears on the cover of the magazine as well as in the photo shoot images as -- what the magazine calls -- "basically barefaced."
However, Gaga tells the Harper's Bazaar she wouldn't exactly call the look natural. "I don't really view it as 'natural,'" she said. "I think that artifice is the new reality. It's more about just being honest and sincere to the core of what you do. Whether I'm wearing lots of make-up or no make-up, I'm always the same person inside."
"I try to not focus on what people expect from me," She added. "I think what has been lovely about my relationship with the public is that they expect something unexpected from me."
Speaking of unexpected, the singer recently opened the MTV Video Music Awards dressed as her male alter-ego Jo Calderone. Not only did Gaga perform her single "You and I" as Calderone, but she also remained in character for the duration of the show, even presenting an award to Britney Spears as Calderone. Some noticed the pop star's uncanny resemblance to a young Ralph Macchio, including the "Karate Kid" himself.
The last time Gaga appeared on the cover of Harper's Bazaar in May, she was featured with protruding cheek bones. A similar alteration appeared on the cover of her "Born This Way" album and during her performance at the 2011 Grammys.
The singer also dished about her work-out routine saying, "I do yoga, I do Bikram and I run, and I eat really healthy. You know, my work sort of feeds me. I keep in shape by working hard."
She also revealed she recently learned how to surf while vacationing in Mexico in August. "I fell off a lot in the beginning," she said, "but one of the surfers said to me, 'Now that you can stand up, just look into the future and enjoy the ride.' I thought that was an interesting metaphor about life."
Gaga Tweeted a photo of herself surfing on August 18 with a caption that read, "yeah thats me. no heels baby."

LADY GaGa has reportedly embarked on a new relationship – with the hunky star of TV show The Vampire Diaries.

The singer began dating actor Taylor Kinney after they filmed the video to her recent single You And I.
She was spotted sinking her teeth into the 30-year-old at a beachside bar in California this week.
Taylor is best known for his role as a werewolf in the popular series – based on vampire mythology sparked by brutal Romanian ruler Vlad the Impaler.
A source said: "It was just casual at first, but things are getting pretty hot and heavy.
"I couldn't tell it was her at first. It just looked like some hot couple making out, but then I realised it was Lady GaGa!
"Everyone went nuts! She was so sweet too - she even signed some autographs."

GaGa and her new squeeze were also seen walking hand in hand the next day.
Another source said: "Her hair was a little messy. It definitely seemed like a 'morning after' situation. They are obviously totally into each other."
The sightings came a month after GaGa and Taylor romped together in the promo for the track she wrote about ex-boyfriend Luc Carl.

Taylor went topless in the video while GaGa dressed as a mermaid. They later exchanged rings in a wedding ceremony.
GaGa – who split from Luc for the second time earlier this year – has previously revealed she gets emotional when she sings You And I because it brings back memories of their relationship.
She explained: "There is not one song on any of my records that wasn't written by me, and I think when you write your own music you find ways to reinvent the songs emotionally through yourself and performance so that they are different every night and that song you know, sometimes it's about the guys and sometimes it's about the fans."

Chart-topper GaGa and Luc, who manages a bar, began dating in 2005 but split when her career took off.
The pair rekindled their romance in 2010, with GaGa saying they were in a "proper monogamous relationship".
Last year she said: "I've really never loved anyone like I loved him. Or like I love him.

"That relationship really shaped me. I sort of resolved that if you can't have the guy of your dreams, there are other ways to give love."
You And I is taken from her No1 album Born This Way and features Queen guitarist Brian May.

Lady Gaga's new boy toy: Taylor Kinney from 'Vampire Diaries?'

It seems that Lady Gaga has finally found the man she will let beneath her meat dress.
RadarOnline is reporting that the lucky boy is "Vampire Diaries" hottie Taylor Kinney, who just so happens to be the co-star of her new "You and I" video. Sources tell RadarOnline that the couple was seen engaging in a little PDA at The Sneak Joint, a beachside bar in Mission Viejo, CA on Sunday (Sep. 4).
"It just looked like some hot couple making out, but then I realized it was Lady Gaga...she even signed some autographs."
The couple was spotted around Mission Viejo for the next few days holding hands and cavorting in general. We hope Taylor can handle being alone when Gaga needs to retreat to her egg and incubate for days at a time.

Report: Lady GaGa Romancing 'Vampire Diaries' Actor

Rumor has it, things are 'getting pretty hot and heavy' between the 'Born This Way' singer and Taylor Kinney after they met on the set of her music video for 'You and I'.

might have found a new man in her life. According to Radar Online, the singer who found fame with such single as "Poker Face" has been dating "The Vampire Diaries" hunk Taylor Kinney ever since the two met on the set of her music video for "You and I" back in July.

"It was just casual at first, but things are getting pretty hot and heavy," one inside source said. Seemingly providing proof to the insider's claim, a Sneak Joint patron talked about witnessing the rumored pair engaging in a little PDA at the beachside bar in Mission Viejo, CA last Sunday, September 4.

"I couldn't tell it was her at first," confessed the observer when talking about GaGa and Kinney's make-out session at the bar. "It just looked like some hot couple making out, but then I realized it was Lady GaGa! Everyone went nuts! She was so sweet too - she even signed some autographs."

GaGa and Kinney were spotted together again on Monday, September 5. This time around, the two reportedly held hands while taking a stroll along Mission Viejo. "Her hair was a little messy. It definitely seemed like a 'morning after' situation," said a witness. "They are obviously totally into each other!" The day after, they were seen together on the beach.

How Bazaar! Lady Gaga Gets Naked in a New Way

We've seen Lady Gaga draped in plush frogs, dressed as a dude and covered in meat.
But rarely do we see her like this!
The pop superstar dared to let her face stay bare on the October cover of Harper's Bazaar, a relatively bold move for any celeb, let alone one who usually only steps out dressed to kill (literally, sometimes, depending on the shoes) and wearing enough makeup to mask an entire Cirque du Soleil troupe.
Wanna see?

MORE: Did Lady Gaga's Jo Calderone rip off Annie Lennox's gender-bending past?
Presenting...Lady Gaga, au naturel. Or not.
"I don't really view it as 'natural,'" she says in her Bazaar cover story. "I think that artifice is the new reality. It's more about just being honest and sincere to the core of what you do. Whether I'm wearing lots of makeup or no makeup, I'm always the same person inside."
"There's this idea that it's all natural, but everything's been staged to look natural," Gaga says of her daily practice of putting on a show just by getting dressed. "It is also an invention. It's just that my inventions are different. I often get asked about my artifice, but isn't fashion based on the idea that we can create a fantasy?"
"I try to not focus on what people expect from me," she continues. "I think what has been lovely about my relationship with the public is that they expect something unexpected from me."
And what's more unexpected from Lady Gaga than simplicity?

Lady Gaga Is 'The Biggest,' Tony Bennett Says

'I'll tell you, I never met anyone with more talent than that lady,' legendary crooner tells MTV News.

Lady Gaga isn't afraid to go jazzy, as fans that saw her version of "Yoü and I" in this year's VMA promo know, and now she's kicking it old-school with Tony Bennett on his new album.

In a new 30-second teaser, Gaga and the legendary crooner sing their rendition of the classic "The Lady Is a Tramp," trading sassy vocals over horns and piano.

"I hate California, it's crowded and damp," New York-native Gaga sings, before Bennett chimes in giggling, "That's why the lady is a tramp."

Then, just as the teaser fades out, Gaga speaks up to say, "Sometimes I go to Coney Island!"
MTV News caught up with Bennett backstage at the 2011 VMAs, where he performed as part of the Amy Winehouse tribute, and he told us he's a huge fan of the Lady.

"My favorite is that Lady Gaga," he gushed about the star, who performed that night as her male alter ego Jo Calderone. "She's the biggest. I'll tell you, I never met anyone with more talent than that lady."
But Gaga is just one of the many contemporary artists who appear on Bennett's latest album, Tony Bennett: Duets II, dropping September 20: Winehouse, John Mayer, Carrie Underwood and Mariah Carey, among others, also appear. Asked about why his music has been appealing to a new generation decades after he launched his career, Bennett credited music lovers of all ages.

"It's a funny situation, I'm 85; I just want to tell you it's a very strange situation," Bennett said. "I always worked live, and ever since 1950, wherever I've played internationally I've been sold out all these years," he explained. "It's amazing. So the public's been on my side all the time."
What do you think of Gaga and Tony Bennett collaborating? Tell us in the comments

Lady Gaga releases 1st fashion shoot

LOS ANGELES--Pop star Lady Gaga has teamed up with Dutch fashion photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin to produce five fashion-inspired vignettes for her latest single "You And I."
The first video, entitled "You And I: Nymph," was released on Thursday and featured the singer posing and pirouetting in a series of black-and-white clips shot by the famed fashion photographer duo.
The 2-minute 10-second video was the creative brainchild of Lady Gaga, who partnered with her stylist Nicola Formichetti to deliver a minimalistic performance dressed in a simple dress with neutral makeup, a far cry from her usual elaborate style as seen in her previous videos.
The pop star, who is known for her quirky avant-garde outfits, first collaborated with high fashion photography duo van Lamsweerde and Matadin in May this year for V Magazine's Asian issue.
The photographers have shot campaigns for fashion brands such as Valentino and Yves Saint Laurent, and have had their work featured in Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and Elle Magazine, among others.
The official video for "You And I," the fourth single from the album "Born This Way," premiered on Aug. 18. Thursday's fashion film release coincides with Lady Gaga's latest column in the October issue of V Magazine, in which she attacks New York Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn for recent, negative reviews of the singer.
Horyn criticized designer Donatella Versace for praising Lady Gaga's Versace outfits, in her June 17, 2011 "On The Runway" blog, writing "Be choosier, Ms. Versace."
Lady Gaga responded to Horyn in her column, asking "shouldn't columnists and reviewers, such as Cathy Horyn, employ a more modern and forward approach to criticism, one that separates them from the average individual at home on their laptop?"
There was no further announcement from Lady Gaga on when the remaining four videos by van Lamsweerde and Matadin will be released.

Lady Gaga Releases First 'Fashion Film' Version of 'You and I'

Video was directed by fashion photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, with four more clips to come.

Most artists make one big splashy video for their latest single and then move on to the next one. As she's proven over and over again, though — most recently at the VMAs, where she stayed in her Jo Calderonecharacter all night long — Lady Gaga is not most people.

After announcing on Twitter on Thursday that she shot five "fashion films" set to "Yoü and I" with Dutch fashion photography duo Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, she unleashed the first clip later that day, "Haus of Ü Featuring Nymph."
In typical Gaga fashion, it is perplexing, mesmerizing and just a bit odd, and nothing like the way-more elaborate, official music video for the rocking ballad. The barely two-minute black-and-white clip has Gaga pulling off a series of balletic twists and turns while wearing a simple slip dress and ballet slippers, her blonde hair loose and waving in the wind or up in a bun. At various points, there appear to be moths or some other kind of insect flying around in the background and lying dead on the ground.
Wearing very little makeup, Gaga stares intently at the camera while dancing in front of a stark white background. At one point she pulls up the dress while writhing on the ground, almost exposing herself. Near the end there is a fleeting moment where she gazes into the camera while holding her hair on her head in what looks like a colorized photo, with blonde applied to her locks, along with blush on her cheeks and a splash of blue on the dress.
Gaga did not announce when the other videos would be posted.

Lady GaGa loses her knickers in raunchy vid

In the latest clip for single You And I, the controversial star arches her back while tugging a silk negligée to expose her bare bottom half.
The raunchy display also sees GaGa make a rare appearance with little of her trademark war-paint on.
The singer has toned down her outfits of late but this is an unusual look for the otherwise heavily made-up star.
Yesterday the hard-working songbird stunned fans by revealing she had made additional FIVE videos for her latest single.
She Tweeted: "Have a surprise for LittleMonsters! Didn't just shoot 1 You and I music video. 5 more fashion films to come by @inezandvinoodh."

She then posted this video, adding: "In collaboration with INEZ+VINOODH. The first in a series. Little Monsters, here's "You and I: NYMPH"
Filmed by Dutch fashion photography duo Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, the first promo — shot in black and white — sees a fresh-faced GaGa elegantly performing ballet moves.

Wearing a pair of pink slip-ons she gracefully swirls around in time to the music.
GaGa gives viewers a glimpse of a snake tattoo on her left thigh and roses on her ribcage while laying on the floor.

The 2.10-minute video also sees the sexy star sliding her hands over her breasts.

Lady Gaga Praises Tavi And Slams Fashion Critics In 'V' Magazine Column

Lady Gaga released her latest "Memorandum" column for V magazine today and HOLY MARY MOTHER MONSTER OF GAWWWWD is it a DOOZY. Entitled "Extreme Critic Fundamentalism," she manages to not only praise internet style wunderkind Tavi Gevinsonas being the future of fashion journalism but also manages to SLAM (and by slam we mean with the verbal intensity of a 50-BLADE SAMURAI SWORD) the head fashion critic at the—GASP—New York Times (which is the golden temple of journalism, the Enchanted Kingdom of the written word, its head critic the high priestess of front row criticism). This is MAYJAH, people. When Gaga speaks, types, tweets, or pontificates, MILLIONS of people listen and spread the word. We're not kidding when we type this (and, really, we're typing so fast with beads of style sweat rolling off our temples at the crazy amazingness of this latest missive), but we may have just witnessed a GLOBAL SHIFT in the way fashion journalism operates from this point forward. May angry bolts of journalistic lightning not strike me dead as I type this, but IS FASHION CRITICISM OVER?
According to Gaga, fashion criticism needs to CHANGE. Frankly, it's become staid, boring, and too intellectual; something that doesn't appeal to a younger generation. The backstory on this whole situation is that Times critic Cathy Horyn criticized the fashion in Gaga's "Born This Way" video, stating that "she looked embalmed in the black Versace harness" and that Donatella Versace should choose someone else other than Gaga to wear her clothes. (Oh no you DIDN'T, Cathy H. Them's FIGHTIN' WORDS!) In her column for V, Gaga responded by saying, "It's so easy to say something is bad. It's so easy to write...hated it," and goes on to compare fashion criticism to high school, saying that it's the hurtful equivalent to "being given a spanking with a ruler by an old nun." (SN-AP! Or should we say SMACKDOWN?)
She goes on to say that she ADORES Tavi's maverick website, The Style Rookie, saying that the "prodigious and well-written blog is the future of journalism." OK, did you just feel the fashion axis SHIFT MASSIVELY with that statement? We did! (Incidentally, Tavi will have a spinoff site debuting this coming Monday, Sept. 5, in the form of a new online teen mag called Rookie.) Closing out her article, Mother Monster asks why we should "give the elephant in the room a peanut if it has already snapped its trunk" at us, saying that the "peanut was dead on arrival." By this, we assume she means that the nature of fashion criticism is intended to skewer artists who are merely working hard to put the feeling of their creativity on the backs of those who want to purchase their vision. She goes on to applaud the many designers she works with closely (no doubt including collaborator Nicola Formichetti, who will open an INSANE-looking pop-up shop during Fashion Week). Then, the pièce de résistance, Gaga says that fashion's hierarchy "is embalmed," (take that, CRITICS), no longer modern, AND currently irrelevant. With that declaration alone, we think she just started a REVOLUTION.

Will Lady Gaga outdo freaky meat dress at MTV awards?

Don't Miss
"The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards" -- We don't recall how many Moonmen trophies Lady Gaga nabbed last year, but we sure do remember that she showed up in a freaky meat dress. Yeah, this awards show is like that. We dig the VMAs more for their outrageous moments (the Britney-Madonna kiss; Kanye's West's dissing of Taylor Swift, etc.) than their nods to artistic achievement. The live acts aren't bad, either, as this year's roster of performers at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles includes the aforementioned Gaga, the red-hot Adele, Lil Wayne, Bruno Mars and Chris Brown. On a more somber note, legendary crooner Tony Bennett is scheduled to introduce a tribute to the late Amy Winehouse. 10 p.m. today, MTV and VH1.
Other Bets
* The summer finale of "Leverage" finds Nate (Timothy Hutton) and the team in Dubai, where an international chess tournament is being held. But will they be pawns in Sterling's (Mark Sheppard) plans to steal a nuclear reactor calibration weight? 7 p.m. today, TNT.
* Another strange case presents itself on "The Glades" when the body of an Ernest Hemingway look-alike is found with a bullet hole in his head during an ocean cruise. Let's hope the script is penned with a distinctive economy of words and understatement. 11 p.m. today, A&E.
* On "Top Gear," our intrepid hosts race $500 clunkers along the Pacific Coast Highway to see which ones perform the best. At least the scenery will be worth the hassle. 11 p.m. today, History Channel.
* Will "Basketball Wives LA" be a ratings slam dunk -- or a brutal brick shot? This spin-off follows a group of NBA players' spouses, girlfriends and exes as they live the glam life in Los Angeles, home to the Lakers and Clippers. 9 p.m. Monday, VH1.
* Say it isn't' so! The summer finale of "Pretty Little Liars" is upon us already? We can't wait to see what other devious doings "A" has planned for the girls. 9 p.m. Tuesday, ABC Family.
* On "Auction Kings," a Cadillac once owned by Elvis Presley arrives at Gallery 63. Then the rock 'n' roll theme continues as the crew also obtains an authentic flag-themed guitar signed by Bruce Springsteen. 10 p.m. Tuesday, Discovery.
* As "Rescue Me" nears the end of the show's distinguished run, it's wedding day for Colleen and Black Shawn (Natalie Distler, Larenz Tate). Oh, you just know it's not going to go off without a hitch -- or two, or three. 11 p.m. Wednesday, FX.
"Nick News With Linda Ellerbee" presents a special installment in "What Happened? The Story of September 11, 2001." The veteran newswoman explains the terrorist attacks for children who weren't born yet, or were too young to understand. Also included: Misconceptions about the attacks. 7 p.m. Thursday, Nickelodeon.
* Everything is, indeed, bigger in Texas -- even the aquariums. On "Tanked," they put the finishing touches on a 57,000-gallon monstrosity at a Dallas mega church. Apparently it will house more than guppies. 7 p.m. Friday, Animal Planet.
* The college football season has just begun and we already have a marquee matchup on the menu as Oregon clashes with LSU. The game between highly ranked teams that had just three losses between them last year is being played in Arlington, Texas. 6 p.m. Saturday, KTVX Channel 4.

We Got Your Crazy: The Wackiest VMA Moments Ever

Let's be real: When it comes to the MTV Video Music Awards, it's never about who wins or loses. Everyone has long forgotten that the Cars' "You Might Think" took top honors at the first VMAs ceremony, or even that Beyonce's "Single Ladies" was the big winner in 2009, but no one will ever forget Madonna's career-making performance from 1984 or Kanye West's Taylor Swift bumrush from 2009.

MTV correspondent Sway promises that this year's show will offer plenty surprises as he anticipates viewers watching with their mouths agape. Considering Lady Gaga topped last year's event with the Video Of The Year win as well as the night's most edible fashion moment, we should expect her to uphold her rep when she opens the show. But you think Gaga can top these 16 craziest incidents in VMA history? Review them below and decide for yourself.

Lady Gaga Answers Age Old Question, "Where's The Beef?" (2010) Only show-stealer Lady Gaga could upstage herself at the VMAs. You think it would be honor enough for Lady Gaga to take home the moonman for Video Of The Year. But no. She received her trophy wearing a dress literally made of raw meat. Viewers wondered if Kanye would apologize to Taylor for ruining her first VMA moment the year prior. And though he didn't, and instead lead the audience in a toast to his fellow jerks, no one really cared. Everyone wanted to know, however, who made Gaga's dress, and whether or not it needed to be refrigerated. This past June we learned that the beefy couture has been preserved by a taxidermist and will enjoy a stay at the Rock And Rock Roll Hall Of Fame And Museum.
Kanye West Doesn't Let Taylor Swift Finish (2009)
In a cruel move that's been likened to pig's blood being dumped on Carrie at the prom, in 2009 Kanye ruined America's sweetheart's big moment when he hopped onstage to protest her winning the Best Female Video moonman over "Single Ladies," aka the BEST VIDEO OF ALL TIME (capslock is Kanye's, not Yahoo!'s). It may have been the greatest thing that ever happened to Taylor's career, which took off as the entire world sympathetically rallied around her. But it was still mean. A year later, Kanye is profusely apologizing all over Twitter and Chelsea's hinting that there may be some sort of West/Swift reunion at this weekend's VMAs. If so, will Kanye reallylet Taylor finish this time?
Britney's "Gimme More" Performance: Gimme Less, Please (2007)
Don't call it a comeback. Because it wasn't. Yes, the big hype in '07 was the fact that Britney Spears--a woman who'd made VMA history in the past by performing with an albino snake--would be kicking off that year's Vegas ceremony with a performance of her supposed comeback single, "Gimme More." But with worse lip-synching than "SNL"-era Ashlee Simpson, clodfooted choreography that in no way reflected the hours of rehearsal time she'd reportedly logged at the Millennium Dance Studio, and utterly confused/disappointed expressions on the famous faces of spectators like 50 Cent and Chris Brown (too bad the cameras didn't cut to Justin Timberlake's surely priceless reaction)...seriously, Kevin Federline could have done a better job opening the VMAs. This performance was trainwrecky enough to make fans shave their own heads in protest, and at the time it seemed like Britney's career was finally kaput.
Tommy Lee & Kid Rock In The Battle For Pamela (2007)
Apparently Pamela Anderson is the Helen Of Troy of rock 'n' roll. In 2007, the "Baywatch" babe's two ex-husbands, Tommy Lee and Kid Rock, got into a brawl during, of all things, Alicia Keys's otherwise mellow VMA performance--resulting in both rockers being escorted out by security. Kid was for all purposes the winner of this fight, since he managed to a) land a punch on Tommy's face and b) keep his cigar in his mouth throughout the brawl. (Kid was cited for misdemeanor battery for his assault on Tommy.) Host Jamie Foxx lightened the mood by later jokingly asking the audience to "stop white-on-white crime."
Madonna, Britney & Xtina: The Kiss Heard Around The World (2003)
All anyone remembers about the 2003 VMAs is the opening number featuring Madonna and the two logical successors to her pop-starlet throne, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. We just think it's sad that people only remember Madge swapping spit with Britney--she kissed Christina too, you know! But somehow it's that Britney/Madonna smooch that remains ingrained in every VMA viewer's brain. Missy Elliott also rapped with the trio, by the way, and her video "Work It" won Video The Year, too. No one remembers that either.
Michael Jackson Wins Non-Existent "Artist Of Millennium" Award (2002)
The King Of Pop was once of the king of MTV. In fact, MTV probably wouldn't have become the empire it is now without his groundbreaking early videos. So it's understandable that when Michael appeared on the VMAs--with Britney Spears presenting him with his 44th birthday cake and saying he was the "artist of the millennium" in her eyes--he thought he was getting a well-deserved Artist Of Millennium Award. The truly embarrassing part was that he mistook a cheap Styrofoam cake decoration for a trophy, then delivered an emotional acceptance speech that namechecked David Blaine. Oh well. Maybe Michael will get a posthumous Artist Of Millennium Award this year...
Eminem Feuds With Moby, Puppet (2002)
Marshall Mathers really needs to pick on people his own size. While Kid Rock at least had the decency to brawl with an equal opponent, in 2002 Eminem flipped off bookish, bespectacled techno star Moby (whom he'd ridiculed in "Without Me"), then later called Moby a "little girl" in one of his acceptance speeches and warned, "I will hit a man with glasses." He also shoved Conan-affiliated canine hand puppet Triumph The Insult Comic Dog, when Triumph attempted to interview Eminem about the Moby incident. Despite being the big VMA winner that year, Shady's shady behavior elicited rounds of audience boos. Where was Kanye to interrupt Eminem's nasty speech, when Moby and Triumph needed him most?
Rage Against The Machine's Bassist Rages Against...Something, We're Just Not Sure What (2000)
Rage Against The Machine are known for their organized protests, but there was nothing organized about the 2000 VMAs, when RATM bass-slinger Tim Commerford (who was calling himself "Tim2K" at the time, in honor of the new millennium) climbed on top of some stage scaffolding during the broadcast and refused to come down. No one was really quite sure what he was protesting, either--although we're going to guess it was the fact that Limp Bizkit had just won an award. Regardless, it was later revealed that rabblerousing documentary director Michael Moore had encouraged Tim2K to "follow his heart" and go through with this stunt.
Diana Ross Gives Lil' Kim A Hand (1999)
When Motown legend Diana met queen bee Kim (when they presented an award together with Mary J. Blige), a simple handshake just wouldn't do. Dirty Diana instead took a very hands-on approach, and enthusiastically jiggled Kim's purple-pastie'd left bosom onstage. Talk about a boob-tube moment!
Fiona Is One Sour Apple (1997)
When waify songstress Fiona Apple was only 20 years old, she was presented with a Best New Artist moonman by none other than Elton John, beating out frontrunners like Hanson, the Wallflowers, and Jamiroquai, the latter of whom won a ton of VMAs for "Virtual Insanity" that year. This was every young artist's dream. But not for Fiona. Instead she took her time at the podium to denounce the entire awards show. "Everybody out there who is watching this world, this world is bulls**t," she babbled, adding a Maya Angelou quote just to keep things classy. Where was Kanye in '97, to interruptthis?
Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love: Van Halen's Botched Reunion Attempt (1996)
The reunion between Van Halen and off/on original frontman David Lee Roth on the VMAs stage--their first appearance together in 10 years--was so exciting. For about 47 seconds. Because that's about how long this particular VH reunion lasted. Eddie Van Halen's icy body language at the VMAs made it clear that he still loathed Diamond Dave--at times he was standing so far away from Roth, he may as well have been on a different show on another network--and Dave's constant goofy quips about Eddie's hip surgery didn't help matters. Rumor has it they nearly got in a fistfight backstage. Now in 2010, Roth and VH are reunited once more and working on a comeback album. So, will they appear at this year's VMAs? We guess that if they do, they'll split up immediately afterwards, and their comeback album will never come out.
Courtney Love Doesn't Let Madonna & Kurt Loder Finish (1995)
The most exciting moment of the '95 VMAs actually took place offstage, once the show was over, when loose-cannon rock widow Courtney Love hijacked VJ Kurt Loder's perfectly civilized interview with elder stateswoman Madonna. (Courtney got Kurt's attention by tossing her powder compact into the press pit.) A lesser pop star may have been intimidated by Courtney's crazy antics. But Courtney was no match for Madge, who in a refreshing change of pace came across as classy and totally non-controversial, smiling benignly while Courtney struggled to remain upright and babbled about Michael Stipe and Birkenstocks. This was live television at its finest.
Michael Jackson Kisses His Bride (1994)
Amid rumors that their tabloid marriage was a sham, a ploy to clean up Michael's post-child-molestation-accusations image, the King Of Pop and the King's daughter canoodled openly onstage at the 1994 VMAs. They convinced precisely three people that they were really in love, while their sloppy smooch effectively grossed out the other 5 million or so people who were watching. Lisa Marie later told Rolling Stone: "That [kiss] was not my idea, by the way. I was terrified. It was [Michael's] manager's idea. I thought it was stupid. All of a sudden I became part of a public relations machine."
The Beasties Sabotage R.E.M.'s Speech (1994)
The Beastie Boys' "Sabotage," one of the GREATEST MUSIC VIDEOS EVER (capslock is Yahoo!'s, not Kanye's), ridiculously lost out in all categories. This shutout so angered Beastie Adam Yauch's lederhosened alter ego, Nathaniel Hornblower, that Nathaniel famously bumrushed the stage during Michael Stipe's typically PC speech, yodeling, "This is an outrage! This is a farce!" (over the injustice that "Sabotage" mastermind Spike Jonze had lost the Best Direction award to R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts"). Stipe just looked confused. But we think it was the VMA judges who were most confused. Spike shouldhave won. We bet even Kanye would agree.
Nirvana Perform At VMAs, Chaos Ensues (1992)
Kurt Cobain never seemed at ease with the whole MTV megafame thing, which was at its peak in 1992, one year after Nevermind came out and changed the music business in ways he probably never imagined or intended. So when Nirvana performed at that year's VMAs, Kurt was his typical rebellious self--starting their performance with a few un-PC bars of their unreleased and unrehearsed tune "Rape Me" (against VMA producers' wishes) in one of the most chaotic and punk-rock appearances in MTV history. At the performance's conclusion, bandmate Krist Novoselic hurled his bass guitar in the air and tried to catch it, but it wacked him in the face instead. Krist blogged years later that Queen's Brian May had nursed him backstage with a glass of champagne, indicating that Krist had adjusted to the swishy MTV lifestyle much more easily than Kurt ever did.
Madonna's Opening Number: A Video Star Is Born (1984)
Older generations vividly recall the exact moment when they first saw Elvis twitch his pelvis on TV or when the Beatles first performed on "Ed Sullivan." But for children of the '80s, one of the most defining televised music moments was when Madonna kicked off the first annual VMAs. Given the many outrageous antics she'd pull off later in her career, it's hard to fathom now that back then, viewers were genuinely shocked when Madonna rolled around onstage to "Like A Virgin" in a see-through wedding gown, granny panties, and pile of rosary beads. But no one had ever seen anything like it at the time. And come to think of it, no one's seen anything like it since.
