Lady Gaga co-hosted ABC's "The View" on Monday and opened up about Amy Winehouse's death, saying she was so devastated by the news that she couldn't speak for two days.
"I'm so devastated and so sad," Lady Gaga said on the morning talk show. "I really couldn't speak for like 48 hours straight. I was in such shock."
The pop star was dressed head-to-toe in black and white houndstooth and performed her recent single "You and I" on a houndstooth piano for hosts Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Joy Behar.
Winehouse was found dead in her London home by her bodyguard on July 23. The troubled 27-year-old jazz and soul singer battled drug and alcohol addictions for years. The cause of her death has yet to be determined.
"You know, I think the most unfortunate thing about it all is the way the media spins things," Lady Gaga continued. "Like, here, we can learn from Amy's death. I don't think Amy needed to learn any lessons. I think the lesson was for the world to be kinder to the superstar. Everybody was so hard on her, and everything that I knew about her was that she was the most lovely and kind woman."
Lady Gaga also opened up about her own drug use, telling "The View" hosts that her father helped her quit.
"I used to do hard drugs. I was so embarrassed," Lady Gaga said. "My dad called me out about it one day and so I stopped. I don't do any hard drugs anymore. I am a part of the green club sometimes. My dad was like 'I know what you're doing because I did and I lost every friend who ever meant anything to me.'"
Winehouse's funeral was held on July 26 and was attended by her family and friends such as Mark Ronson, who produced the singer's Grammy-winning single "Rehab" and her 2006 album "Back To Black," as well as reality star and actress Kelly Osbourne. She wore her hair in a beehive, mimicking Winehouse's signature look. (See photos from Amy Winehouse's funeral as well as photos of Amy Winehouse from recent years.)
Winehouse, who spent time in rehab several times, had tried to resurrect her music career prior to her death. In July 2010, she said a new album would be released within six months, but it was never finished. In January of 2011, Winehouse performed in Brazil. But in May, she spent about a week at a London clinic for what would mark her last in-house stint to battle alcohol addiction.
The singer was set to tour Europe, starting in June. But a botched performance in Serbia on June 18, during which Winehouse was booed off stage for being late and displaying odd behavior, prompted her to cancel the rest of her concerts.
Sales of Winehouse's music have soared since her death and it was reported last week that Winehouse left behind several unreleased tracks that could be put together for a posthumous album.
