"The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards" -- We don't recall how many Moonmen trophies Lady Gaga nabbed last year, but we sure do remember that she showed up in a freaky meat dress. Yeah, this awards show is like that. We dig the VMAs more for their outrageous moments (the Britney-Madonna kiss; Kanye's West's dissing of Taylor Swift, etc.) than their nods to artistic achievement. The live acts aren't bad, either, as this year's roster of performers at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles includes the aforementioned Gaga, the red-hot Adele, Lil Wayne, Bruno Mars and Chris Brown. On a more somber note, legendary crooner Tony Bennett is scheduled to introduce a tribute to the late Amy Winehouse. 10 p.m. today, MTV and VH1.

Other Bets

* The summer finale of "Leverage" finds Nate (Timothy Hutton) and the team in Dubai, where an international chess tournament is being held. But will they be pawns in Sterling's (Mark Sheppard) plans to steal a nuclear reactor calibration weight? 7 p.m. today, TNT.

* Another strange case presents itself on "The Glades" when the body of an Ernest Hemingway look-alike is found with a bullet hole in his head during an ocean cruise. Let's hope the script is penned with a distinctive economy of words and understatement. 11 p.m. today, A&E.

* On "Top Gear," our intrepid hosts race $500 clunkers along the Pacific Coast Highway to see which ones perform the best. At least the scenery will be worth the hassle. 11 p.m. today, History Channel.

* Will "Basketball Wives LA" be a ratings slam dunk -- or a brutal brick shot? This spin-off follows a group of NBA players' spouses, girlfriends and exes as they live the glam life in Los Angeles, home to the Lakers and Clippers. 9 p.m. Monday, VH1.

* Say it isn't' so! The summer finale of "Pretty Little Liars" is upon us already? We can't wait to see what other devious doings "A" has planned for the girls. 9 p.m. Tuesday, ABC Family.

* On "Auction Kings," a Cadillac once owned by Elvis Presley arrives at Gallery 63. Then the rock 'n' roll theme continues as the crew also obtains an authentic flag-themed guitar signed by Bruce Springsteen. 10 p.m. Tuesday, Discovery.

* As "Rescue Me" nears the end of the show's distinguished run, it's wedding day for Colleen and Black Shawn (Natalie Distler, Larenz Tate). Oh, you just know it's not going to go off without a hitch -- or two, or three. 11 p.m. Wednesday, FX.

* "Nick News With Linda Ellerbee" presents a special installment in "What Happened? The Story of September 11, 2001." The veteran newswoman explains the terrorist attacks for children who weren't born yet, or were too young to understand. Also included: Misconceptions about the attacks. 7 p.m. Thursday, Nickelodeon.

* Everything is, indeed, bigger in Texas -- even the aquariums. On "Tanked," they put the finishing touches on a 57,000-gallon monstrosity at a Dallas mega church. Apparently it will house more than guppies. 7 p.m. Friday, Animal Planet.

* The college football season has just begun and we already have a marquee matchup on the menu as Oregon clashes with LSU. The game between highly ranked teams that had just three losses between them last year is being played in Arlington, Texas. 6 p.m. Saturday, KTVX Channel 4.

Lady Gaga's Wild VMA History: What Will 2011 Bring?

Lady Gaga is already a VMA icon. Since she first made her VMA debut in 2009, she has become a force to be reckoned with. She annually makes headlines for her fierce sense of style, her fierce sense of self and the fact that she's always willing to do the unexpected. That combination has made her a fan favorite. And, she said those qualities are an extension of her as a celebrity.

"I think something that's always been very important to me ... is that the fame as an art form has always been an interesting stage," she told MTV News during "MTV First: Lady Gaga." "It begins on the subway or in the car on the way here. It begins when I wake up in the morning and I take a shower. It's not something that is temporal. It has no end, so I'm excited to continue as an artist to push the boundaries of where pop music can exist."
2009
Arrival: She hit the carpet at Radio City Music Hall in New York City wearing a designer neck brace, but it was her date, the beloved Kermit the Frog, that really made headlines.
Outfits: Four in the main part of the show, which included her red-carpet Victorian-style gown, her white and blood-smeared performance bra and underwear, a red lace Alexander McQueen dress/mask/top hat combo and a sparkly white dress and wreath hat.
Nominations: She tied pal Beyoncé with nine nods, including Video of the Year and Best Female Video.
Wins: Three, including Best New Artist.
Performances: She gave fans a theatrical take on her "Paparazzi" track, seemingly bleeding all over the stage at the famed New York institution.
2010
Arrival: She hit the carpet in L.A. in a stunning McQueen dress joined by dates that were just as surprising as her 2009 beau: former armed-services members, in protest of the now-defunct "don't ask, don't tell" policy.
Outfits: Three, which included her red-carpet look by McQueen, an edgy black ball gown by Giorgio Armani, and, of course, the infamous meat dress by Franc Fernandez.
Nominations: Thirteen nominations, including nods for Video of the Year, Best Choreography and Best Collaboration.
Wins: Eight wins, including the night's big prize of Video of the Year for "Bad Romance," beating out herself for "Telephone."
Performances: She rather unexpectedly gave a blink-and-you-might-miss-it sneak peek at her 2011 single "Born This Way." When she hit the stage to accept her Video of the Year award, she sang part of the song's infectious chorus.
2011
Arrival: She's certain to arrive, but how will she do it and who will be her date? Frankly, anything is possible.
Outfits: Given her penchant of wearing numerous outfits over the course of the night, we expect many looks at this year's show.
Nominations: She racked up four noms for Best Female Video and Best Video With a Message for "Born This Way," as well as Best Art Direction and Best Choreography for "Judas."
Wins: That's up to the fans, who vote on winners.
Performances: She's scheduled to open the show and set the vibe for the entire night. Given the caliber of stars (Eminem and Rihanna, Janet Jackson, Madonna with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera) who have done it in the past, it is one of the most-coveted slots in the show.

Lady Gaga Get A Lot Of Grammy Nominations.

Musically, The Fame Monster has also received abundant success. Equating to the amount of Grammy nominations her debut received, The Fame Monster garnered a total of six; the album won for Best Pop Vocal Album and earned her a second-consecutive nomination for Album of the Year.^[69][70] The success of the album allowed Gaga to start her second worldwide concert tour, The Monster Ball Tour, just weeks after the release of The Fame Monster and months after having finished The Fame Ball Tour.^[71] Upon finishing in May 2011, the critically acclaimed^[72][73] and commercially accomplished^[74] tour ran for over one and a half years and, according to Billboard, grossed 227.4 million dollars, making it one of the highest-grossing concert tours of all time and the highest-grossing for a debut headlining artist.^[75] Additionally, Gaga has performed other songs from the album at international events such as the 2009 Royal Variety Performance where she sang "Speechless", a power ballad, in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II;^[76] the 52nd Grammy Awards where her opening performance consisted of the song "Poker Face" and a piano duet of "Speechless" in a medley of "Your Song" with Elton John;^[77] and the 2010 BRIT Awards where a performance of an acoustic rendition of "Telephone" followed by "Dance in the Dark" dedicated to the late fashion designer and close friend,Alexander McQueen,^[78] supplemented her hat-trick win at the awards ceremony.^[79]

Excited about bringing back Polaroid and "combining it with the digital era", Gaga was named Chief Creative Officer for a line of imaging products for the international optic company in January 2010 with the intent of creating fashion, technology and photography products.^[80] Her production team, Mermaid Music LLC, was sued in March by Rob Fusari; claiming that he was entitled to a 20% share of its earnings. Gaga's lawyer, Charles Ortner, described the agreement with Fusari as "unlawful" and declined to comment;^[81] five months later, the New York Supreme Court dismissed both the lawsuit and a countersuit by Gaga.^[82] In April, Gaga was named one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people of the year.^[83] While giving an interview to The Times, Gaga hinted at having Systemic lupus erythematosus, commonly referred to as lupus, which is a connective tissue disease.^[84] She later confirmed with Larry King that she does not have lupus but "the results were borderline positive".^[85] With the television host, Gaga also revealed that she was among several artists who would have opened for Michael Jackson during his This Is It concert series at London's O2 Arena. "I was actually asked to open for Michael on his tour," she stated. "We were going to open for him at the O2 and we were working on making it happen." She added: "I believe there was some talk about us, lots of the openers, doing duets with Michael on stage."^[86] In November 2010, one month after the singer reported assassination fears,^[87] a restraining order was issued against Russian Anastasia Obukhova, who had threatened to shoot her in the head.^[88]

Lady Gaga Bad Romance!

Written over the course of 2008–09, The Fame Monster, a collection of eight songs, was released in November 2009. Each song, dealing with the darker side of fame from personal experience while she traveled the world, is expressed through a monster metaphor. Its first single "Bad Romance" topped the charts in eighteen countries, while reaching the top-two in the United States, Australia and New Zealand.^[59][60] In the U.S., Gaga became the first artist in digital history to have three singles (along with "Just Dance" and "Poker Face") to pass the four million mark in digital sales.^[61][62] The song won a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance while its accompanying music video won the Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video.^[63]

The album's second single "Telephone", which features singer Beyoncé, was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals and became Gaga's fourth UK number-one single^[64] while its accompanying music video, although controversial, received a more positive reception from contemporary critics: praising her for "the musicality and showmanship of Michael Jackson and the powerful sexuality and provocative instincts of Madonna".^[65] Her following single "Alejandro" paired Gaga with fashion photographer Steven Klein for a music video similarly as controversial—critics complimented its idea and dark nature,^[66] but the Catholic League attacked Gaga for her alleged use of blasphemy.^[67] Despite the controversy surrounding her music videos, they made Gaga the first artist to gain over one billion viral views on video-sharing website YouTube.^[68]

2008–2010: The Fame and The Fame Monster

 By 2008, Gaga had relocated to Los Angeles, where she worked extensively with her record label to complete her debut album The Fame (2008).^[31] She combined different genres on the album, "from Def Leppard drums and hand claps to metal drums on urban tracks."^[32] The Fame received positive reviews from contemporary critics; according to the music review aggregation of Metacritic, it garnered an average score of 71/100.^[46] The album peaked at number one in United Kingdom, Canada, Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Ireland, and the top-five in Australia, the United States and fifteen other countries.^[47][48]Worldwide, The Fame has sold over fourteen million copies.^[49] Its lead single "Just Dance" topped the charts in six countries—Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States—and later received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Dance Recording.^[50]

The following single "Poker Face" was an even greater success, reaching number-one in almost all major music markets in the world, including the United Kingdom and the United States.^[51] It won the award for Best Dance Recording at the 52nd Grammy Awards, over nominations for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. The Fame was nominated for Album of the Year; it won the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronica Album.^[52] Although her first concert tour happened as an opening act for fellow Interscope pop group, the reformed New Kids on the Block,^[53] she ultimately embarked on her own worldwide concert tour, The Fame Ball Tour, which was critically appreciated and began in March 2009; ending in September of that year.^[54] The cover of the annual "Hot 100" issue of Rolling Stone in May 2009 featured a semi-nude Gaga wearing only strategically placed plastic bubbles.^[29][55]

In the issue she said that while she was beginning her career in the New York club scene, she was romantically involved with a heavy metaldrummer. She described their relationship and break-up, saying of it, "I was his Sandy, and he was my Danny [of Grease], and I just broke." He later became an inspiration behind some of the songs on The Fame.^[55] She was nominated for a total of nine awards at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, winning the award for Best New Artist, while her single "Paparazzi" won two awards for Best Art Direction and Best Special Effects.^[56] In October Gaga received Billboard magazine's Rising Star of 2009 award.^[57] She attended the Human Rights Campaign's "National Dinner" the same month, before marching in the National Equality March for the equal protection of LGBT people in all matters governed by U.S. civil law in Washington, D.C.^[2][58]
